About Bret

Dr. Bret Anderson is a Professor of Economics and Co-Director of the Institute for Applied Sustainability
(IAS) at Southern Oregon University. Bret directs the Community Resilience and Leadership Student
Fellows Program, which is IAS’s flagship curricular program that blends renewable energy infrastructure, the collective wisdom of community partners, and curricular innovations to create a living laboratory for students. Bret is trained in the macroeconomics of growth and employment, but has applied his efforts to transforming how higher education is done since the twin crises of the Covid disruption and the 2020 Labor Day fires made the need for place-based education more visible to him. Bret holds a BS in Finance from Drake University and a MS and PhD in Economics from Colorado State University.
